Diving into a Bizarre Steam Demo: Guiding a Piece of Feces on a Quest to Arrive at the Toilet
Steam Next Fest is currently underway, and enthusiasts have discovered a variety of engaging indie games. Yet, one catches the eye for its unconventional concept. Named Unko Technica, this old-school styled side-scrolling game includes a hero that is truly a dung striving to navigate to a toilet. In case you're wondering, "Unko" is Japanese for "poop."
Player controls is straightforward: just use a one button to leap. Across numerous levels, battle mini-bosses and visit a shop to acquire customizations for your dung hero.
Time your actions carefully, since one mistake forces starting over. Bounce off floating orbs to launch your character to new heights, traverse disappearing ledges, and touch triggers to open hidden paths. Gather currency to purchase more difficult levels in which things ramps up.
In terms of design, the experience features neon environments and a killer soundtrack. Its minimalist art featuring morphing basic polygons could recall players of beloved games like Earthbound.
Although tough to name similar titles where you control a dung character, interactive entertainment often featured scatological themes. For example, in Death Stranding, you can create throwables from protagonist droppings. Examples include Palworld and Ark: Survival Evolved use feces as plant food. And of course, such content is present heavily in Obsidian's role-playing game The Stick of Truth.
Putting aside its goofy idea, Unko Technica has already earned significant recognition, including winning at Bandai Namco's GYAAR Studio in 2023. A playable preview is accessible currently on Steam, with the final release scheduled to debut on computers in the fall.
