We hadn't extensively covered Ohio in the game's history too much, commented the creative director. Starting from the established world, if you move east, you begin entering the Capital Wasteland. That region has been thoroughly developed. Ohio hasn't really been touched on extensively. So, Fallout 76 being set earliest in the timeline provides us multiple creative opportunities. Drawing Inspiration from Classic Titles

What immediately surprises about the game's depiction of Ohio is that it's developed as a desert wasteland. This may look surprising given the real-world location of Ohio, but there's a intentional explanation for this design decision: The aesthetic was directly influenced by the Capital Wasteland and New Vegas.

Instead of directly replicating aspects from previous titles, the creators concentrated on capturing the core feeling of those games within this update.

It wasn't so much about studying those games and stating we must have certain features, explained the development lead.
