{'I could have killed them' - Lawson faces near miss with F1 safety personnel
Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson stated he came dangerously close to a potentially deadly incident during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when two marshals ran across the track right in his path
The concerning event took place on the third lap when safety workers were observed on the track as Lawson was returning to the race following an premature pit stop to change his damaged front wing
Competitor's Live Reaction
Shortly afterward, the team's competitor Lawson spoke to his team engineer saying: "Are you kidding me? Could you believe what happened? I nearly... ended their lives"
"I honestly couldn't believe what I was witnessing"
"I came out on a new set of hards, and then I got to Turn One and there were just two guys dashing across the track"
"I almost collided with one of them, truthfully, it was incredibly risky"
Security Issues Highlighted
"Clearly there's been a miscommunication somewhere but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I haven't really seen that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"
"We cannot comprehend how on a live track safety personnel can be authorized to just dash across the track in such a way. I have no idea why, I'm certain we'll get some form of reasoning, but this absolutely cannot recur"
Formal Inquiry in Progress
Formula 1's governing body, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), is actively examining the circumstances
"After an occurrence at turn one, the race directors was notified that debris was present on the track at the critical section of that bend" commented the regulatory authority
"During the third lap, safety personnel were alerted and put on alert to access the circuit and clear the fragments once the entire field had cleared the area"
"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had pitted, the instructions to dispatch officials were withdrawn and a double yellow flag was raised in that zone"
"We are still investigating what transpired subsequent to that time"
